Fred's observations on motorcycling, magazines and companies are hilarious. Don't miss'em.
Biography
Fred Rau has been a motorcycle journalist for over 25 years, starting as a freelance writer and becoming the editor of Wing World magazine in the early 80s. In 1990, he was hired as the Managing Editor of Road Rider magazine, eventually becoming the Editor-in-Chief, and when Road Rider went out of business, he started Motorcycle Consumer News (MCN) along with his mentor, Bob Carpenter.
After 15 years as Editor and then Senior Editor of MCN, Fred went back to his roots as a freelance moto-journalist in December of 2004. He still writes his famous and controversial Contact Patch editorials for MCN, but also has monthly columns now in Friction Zone magazine on the West Coast and Backroads magazine on the East Coast, as well as producing feature articles for all these and several other magazines, and is currently serving as the Editor for MRF Reports for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation.
In the course of his career, Fred has ridden and tested over 300 different motorcycles, racking up over one million miles in the saddle while doing so. His work with MCN has been awarded the Motorcycle Safety Foundation award for Outstanding Enthusiast Press, and his editing of David Hough's famous "Proficient Motorcycling" book won the National Library Association Gold Medal. He has also been honored with the Ride For Kids "Champions" award for his work with that charity, and the American Motorcyclist Association's "MVP" award as a "Most Valued Person in Motorcycling." Fred has been a regular Americade "featured speaker" for over 15 years, becoming one of the most enduring and popular of all time.
